Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Sacramento CA
1246 PM PST Mon Dec 30 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Mainly dry weather continues through the most of the week with
cold morning lows and patchy Valley frost and fog. Chances for
precipitation return late in the week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Dry and quiet weather persists across interior NorCal today under
dry northwest flow. Locally breezy northerly wind gusts up to
15-25 mph are being observed across portions of the west side of
the Valley this afternoon. Winds will subside this evening.
Otherwise, cold morning lows with areas of frost are expected
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, with Valley lows in the 30s.
Widespread freezing temperatures are not expected at this time.
The NBM has a 10 to 35% chance of temperatures in the Valley
reaching 32 degrees or lower on Tuesday morning, mainly along the
east side of the Valley. The NBM depicts a 20-40% probability of
visibilities less than a quarter mile Tuesday morning across
portions of the southern Sacramento and northern San Joaquin
valleys Tuesday morning. Thursday morning lows will be a little
warmer, with Valley lows in the 40s.

Ensembles show a weak shortwave passing through the Pacific
Northwest on Wednesday. This could bring some light showers across
portions of the Coastal Range, southern Cascades, and Shasta
County. The NBM projects a 20 to 45% chance of rainfall amounts
exceeding 0.10" across the northern Sacramento Valley and
surrounding higher terrain. Otherwise, dry weather is expected on
Thursday, with Valley high temperatures in the mid to upper 50s.
Precipitation chances return Thursday night as ensembles suggest
a trough moving across interior NorCal late week. Check
weather.gov/sto for the latest updates and check quickmap.dot.ca.gov
before you go this holiday season!

&&

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Friday THROUGH Monday)...

Ensemble guidance indicates troughing moving through the region
late week, bringing another round of moderate precipitation and
breezy winds Friday into early Saturday morning. The NBM shows a
50-75% probability of precipitation amounts exceeding 0.50" across
the northern Sacramento Valley and mountains, with a 10-30%
probability across the southern Sacramento and northern San
Joaquin valleys. Snow levels look to initially be above pass
levels Friday morning, lowering to around 5000 to 6000 feet Friday
evening. Currently there is a 30 to 60% chance of snow
accumulations exceeding 4" above 6000 feet. Lingering mountains
showers/snow showers are possible through early Saturday morning,
then drier weather into Monday as upper level ridging builds
inland. Locally gusty north to east wind possible Sunday into
Monday.

&&

.AVIATION...

Mainly VFR conditions over the next 24 hours. Areas MVFR/IFR in
BR with isolated LIFR due to FG and low stratus possible in
southern Sacramento and northern San Joaquin valleys 06Z-17Z
Tuesday. In the Valley, northerly surface wind sustained 10 to 15
kts with gusts 16 to 22 kts until 00z Tuesday.
&&

.STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
None.
